H1N1 Flu Mist Insanity
H1N1 Flu Mist Insanity

As public health departments and physicians across the country prepare for the impending “pandemic” we know affectionately as The Swine Flu, many of them will not be paying attention to anything but the hype and lies that are being propagated by the Centers for Disease Control and other mainstream medical associations. There is little doubt from those that pay attention to the inherent conflicts of interest within these governmental and medical organizations (primarily the CDC and FDA) that there seems to be far more concern with the bottom lines of the vaccine manufacturers than there is with the health and well being of the American public.
For any discerning physician that cares to educate themselves on the facts behind the live H1N1 nasal spray vaccine and continues to vaccinate those individuals targeted by our government for inoculation, I consider them to be criminals and domestic terrorists. Many of us have heard that pregnant women and children will be among the first to receive the H1N1 vaccine and because of the all-too-real concern regarding the mercury content of the injected H1N1 vaccine, many parents and expectant mothers will opt for the nasal vaccines for their children. This decision could be the mistake of a lifetime.I have before me as I am writing this, the PDF copy of the H1N1 2009 Monovalent Intranasal Vaccine insert and what I am reading is disturbing to say the least. On the very first page of this 21 page PDF, under the heading of “Use in Specific Populations” I am reading; “Safety and effectiveness of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine, Live Intranasal, have not been studied in pregnant women or nursing mothers.” On the very same page in the “Full Prescribing Information Contents” sections, #8 reads; “Specific Population” 8.1 states clearly; “Pregnancy” and 8.2 states “Nursing mothers”. So while there have been no studies regarding how this vaccine will affect the fetus of a pregnant mother or her nursing infant, they are still being targeted as those that should be subjected to this vaccine!
If this weren’t enough for worried expectant mothers, 8.1 Pregnancy category C, states “Animal reproductive studies have not been conducted (with this vaccine). It is not known whether (this vaccine) can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproductive capacity.” This same paragraph goes on to clearly suggest that the vaccine “should be given to pregnant women only if clearly needed“, Yet pregnant women are one of the main groups targeted so I feel that it is safe to assume that this fills that criterion for vaccination despite the fact that they have no idea what the side effects will be. Section 8.3 (Nursing Mothers) gets even better. “It is not known whether (this vaccine) is excreted in human milk. Therefore, as some viruses are excreted in human milk and additionally, because of the possibility of shedding of vaccine virus and the close proximity of a nursing infant and mother caution should be exercised if (this vaccine) is administered to nursing mothers.”It just gets worse as we read on. How many in this country have been asked (or will be asked) if their children are asthmatic prior to being vaccinated at the local WalMart or grocery store pharmacy? It seems that this particular vaccine increases the potential risk of wheezing, asthma attacks and hospitalization. Also, this document states that if there has been a history of Guillain Barre’ Syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous influenza vaccination, “the decision to give Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine, Live, Intranasal or Flu Mist should be based on careful consideration of the potential benefits and potential risks.” So contracting a disorder that paralyzes you could possibly indicate that perhaps you shouldn’t receive another poisonous injection? Am I the only one that finds this bizarre? The CDC also warns you that this vaccine “may not protect all individuals receiving the vaccine.” To be honest with you, to call the CDC disingenuous would be a serious understatement given that last year’s seasonal flu vaccine was determined to be 90% ineffective yet they continued to tell the American public that they should get the vaccine anyway.
Here are a couple of other side effects that one should consider before subjecting themselves or their children to this idiotic measure to supposedly protect them from a virus that by all indications is far less virulent than the common seasonal flu: Exacerbation of symptoms of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (Leigh Syndrome), Gastrointestinal disorders (i.e. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) Immune system disorders (anaphylactic reaction, facial edema and uticaria) Guillain Bare’ syndrome and Bells Palsy, Respiratory, thoracic and mediatinal disorders and skin and tissue disorders.
Add to this previous nonsense the fact that this nasal spray vaccine is a LIVE virus and therefore must infect and replicate in cells lining the nasopharynx of the recipient to induce immunity, one must assume that this will allow the H1N1 virus to be shed to those that come in contact with the ones that have recently been vaccinated. Many doctors believe that this infectious stage lasts up to 21 days! Let’s not also forget that the cribiform plate, the paper thin bone at the top of the nasal passages will allow this live virus to infect the brains of a small portion of those that receive the vaccines, causing a brain infection known as encephalitis which, pardon me for mentioning, is far more deadly than this benign “pandemic”.With all this information, one should get only one message: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Dr. Jay Gordon on Swine Flu Vaccine
I just received an e-mail from Dr. Jay Gordon regarding the swine flu vaccine and I thought I'd share it with you, loyal readers. I have a far more comprehensive piece on the swine flu planned for early next week.
I will say though, I completely agree with Dr. Gordon.
Without further ado, here's his thoughts on the topic:
Greetings!
I have seen more children and adults with influenza-like illness: 104 degree fevers, muscle soreness, sore throat and negative tests for strep, than in any summer I can remember. I haven't used the "flu swab" to test anybody, but I'm sure that many if not most of these sick people had Swine Flu. They all felt miserable, and they are all feeling just fine now.
Preventing outbreaks of this "novel H1N1" influenza may be a mistake of huge proportions. Yes, sadly, there will be fatalities among the 6 billion citizens of the planet. Tens of millions of cases of any illness will lead to morbidity and mortality, but this is completely (tragically) unavoidable. The consequences of not acquiring immunity this time around, however, could be really terrible and far outweigh a mass prevention program.
Here's my rationale for not using Tamiflu: If (if, if, if) this virus circles the globe as the rather innocent influenza it now appears to be, but mutates and returns as a very virulent form of influenza, it will be quite wonderful and life-saving to have formed antibodies against its 2009 version. These antibodies may be far from 100% protective, but they will help. This is incredibly important but being ignored in the interest of expediency.
In 1918, it appears that influenza A (an H1N1, by the way) did this globe-trotting mutation and killed millions. The times and state of medical care are not comparable, but a milder parallel occurrence is possible. Perhaps this happens every 100 years or so, perhaps every three million.
Whenever possible, we should form antibodies against viruses at the right stage of their existence and at the right stage of our lives (For example, chickenpox in childhood and EBV/mono in early childhood. There are many other examples.) Getting many viral illnesses confers lifetime immunity, and very few vaccines do.
Tamiflu is a very powerful drug with little proven efficacy against this bug, and with its major side effect being tummy upset. I'm not using it at all. Psychiatric side effects are also possible.
I also won't be giving the flu shot to the kids and parents in my practice unless there are extraordinary risk factors. I anticipate giving none at all this year. I doubt that there will be any really large problems with the vaccine, but I also doubt any really large benefits. As I said, I think that this year's version of this particular H1N1 is as "mild" as it will ever be and that getting sick with it this year will be good rather than bad. The chances that a new "flu shot" will be overwhelmingly effective are small.
I consider this, and most seasonal and novel influenza A vaccines, as "experimental" vaccines; they've only been tested on thousands of people for a period of weeks and then they'll be given to hundreds of millions of people. Not really the greatest science when we're in that much of a hurry. Yes, one can measure antibodies against a certain bacterium or virus in the blood and it may be associated with someone not getting sick, but there are very few illnesses common enough or enough ethics committees willing enough to do the right tests. That is, give 1000 people the real vaccine and 1000 placebo shots, expose all of them to the disease and see who gets sick. Seriously. I know it sounds terrible.
This is, obviously, a difficult public discussion because it touches on the concept of benefits and risks, again, of morbidity and mortality. Few public officials have the courage or inclination to present all facets of this difficult decision. I give vaccines to my patients every single day, but I always err on the side of caution. Implying that this is a dangerous new shot is not scientifically or statistically correct and represents hyperbole and even dishonesty on the part of the so-called "anti-vaccine" camp.
It sure isn't "sexy" to suggest handwashing, good nutrition, hydration, extra sleep and so on. It's not conventional to suggest astragalus, echinacea, elderberry and vitamin C. Adequate vitamin D levels are crucial, too.
I just think that giving this new H1N1 vaccine is not the cautious nor best thing to do.
Best,
Jay Gordon, MD FAAP
More to come! In the meantime, stay healthy loyal readers. :)

Sweeteners Which Are 'Sweet' For Your Health
From the day we're born, we're programmed to enjoy the taste of anything sweet. Even mother's milk contains a natural sweetener...lactose. Unfortunately, because organic lactose is hard to come by on the marketplace, many baby formula makers are now using sucrose as their sweetener of choice.
“Sucrose tends to be five times sweeter than lactose and too much of any sugar can cause problems, but especially sucrose. There can be problems with dental damage, problems with tooth decay, excessive weight gain, and sucrose tends to make people overeat, “said Dr. Jennifer Shu, a pediatrician at Atlanta’s Children’s Medical Group.
Indeed, it should be noted that sucrose-sweetened baby formulas are banned in Europe. Experts are concerned about the proliferation of childhood obesity rates among other health concerns. And truly, do we really want our newborn infants exposed to refined sugars at such an early age, if at all? I know, as a mother of two, I certainly don't. Yet another reason to applaud breastfeeding mothers.
Indeed, America's addiction to sugar has created an epidemic of health and immune problems including candida overgrowth, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, adrenal fatigue, diabetes, and obesity.
25 Reasons to Avoid Sugar
While we're all very much aware of the dangers of refined sugars, the news is finally coming to light and circling among the masses that artificial sweeteners [i.e. aspartame, saccharin, and sucrolose], are downright dangerous to ingest. For more information on these market-heavy products, click HERE.
"So if I can't use sugar or Splenda/Sweet N' Low/Equal...what can I use, Bridgett?"
Oh! I'm so glad you asked, dear reader.
Allow me to lead you to the world of all-natural, organic products. The good news is, healthy natural sweeteners do exist.
- Products made from flowers, plants, and trees.
- Products which don't contain chlorine or various other chemicals.
- Products which won't cause overeating by fooling your brain with addictive components.
Stevia
Stevia is derived from a small shrub found primarily in China and South America, and is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. In its unrefined yet medicinal form it has a slight licorice taste that makes it unpleasant as a sweetener. Many years ago the Japanese discovered how to extract the two sweet elements in stevia, (rebaudioside and stevioside) from the leaf creating the safest, natural, calorie-free sweetener on the market today. In fact, the Coca-Cola company is now using Stevia in their diet drinks.
Benefits of Stevia [according to Donna Gates for Body Ecology]:
- It has a long history of safe use as an herbal sweetener, and as an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic agent.
- It helps balance the pancreas, which is quite often compromised in people with candida.
- It is recommended for diabetics and for people with hypoglycemia.
- It regulates the digestive tract and greatly increases energy.
- It does not feed candida in the intestinal tract.
Here are a couple Stevia brands I recommend:
Only Sweet
Now
Both are zero calories and can be purchased in powder or liquid form. The NOW brand can be purchased on Amazon.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables and is even produced by the human body during normal carbohydrate metabolism . Xylitol is typically manufactured from birch tree cellulose or other natural xylan-rich sources.
Benefits of Xylitol
- It has been clinically proven to fight dental cavities, and to facilitate the remineralization of dental enamel.
- It tastes similar to sugar, with 40% fewer calories.
- It helps stabilize blood sugar.
- It does not feed candida in the intestinal tract.
- It fights respiratory and ear infections, decreasing the need for antibiotics.
Is it safe? Yes! In 1983, JECFA, a joint expert committee of WHO and FAO, confirmed the fact, already known by scientists that it is a safe sweetener for foods. The FDA also confirmed this fact in 1986.
A couple brands I recommend?
I use products from both of these companies and highly recommend them to you [no, I'm not getting paid to say this either]. Epic Dental provides my family toothpaste (flouride-free, of course), mouthwash, mints, and gum. Xlear provides individual packets of xylitol for drinks and nasal spray.
Lo Han
Lo Han, another natural sweetener that does not feed candida, is extracted from the Lo Han Guo fruit, which is a member of the gourd family. I am not personally familiar with this sweetener, but it has been used for decades in western medicine.
Benefits of Lo Han:
- It is 250-400 times sweeter than sugar.
- Is calorie free.
- Like Stevia and xylitol, it is safe for diabetics and hypoglycemics.
- It is used as a medicinal herb in Southern China, and for treating coughs and sore throats.
If any of you, loyal readers, have used this sweetener and are familiar with its properties, please leave a comment in the comment section. I'm anxious to learn more about Lo Han.
Manuka & Raw, Organic Honey
Manuka Honey is a premium medical-grade honey, exclusively found in the New Zealand region. It has been discovered that this unique type of honey contains extraordinary healing properties that are capable of treating a wide spectrum of health conditions. Although pricey, it's an excellent supplement to keep in the cupboards, as its benefits are AMAZING. Manuka honey is the 'Cadillac' of all honey.
Raw, organic honey has been used for centuries for its healing properties, as well as its sweetness. People use it to bake as it requires less use of heat. Its tasty flavor is one reason many people prefer it over table sugar. Besides that, honey is much sweeter than regular table sugar and better for you.
It’s always best if you buy locally grown organic raw honey whenever you can. Locally grown because it’s produced by bees which are from the environment in which you live. It's wise to grow or consume foods from the area in which you live as they contain the immune stimulating properties needed for your body to adapt to its environment. Fresh raw honey will also be tastier, and more potent. And, when you buy from local independent farmers you help keep them in business, which is good for your economy.
Benefits of Manuka Honey:
- Manuka Honey has natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
- Manuka Honey creates a moist healing environment that allows new skin cells to grow across a healing wound flush with the surface of the wound, preventing deformity of the skin and scaring.
- Manuka Honey rapidly clears infection by destroying bacteria.
- Manuka Honey repairs damaged skin and regenerates new skin growth.
- Manuka Honey hastens the healing process.
- Manuka Honey eliminates malodor by destroying the bacteria that cause it.
- Manuka Honey can heal Staph infections and destroy antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA and VRE.
- The viscosity of Manuka Honey provides a protective barrier to prevent wounds from becoming infected.
- Manuka Honey causes scabs and dead skin cells to lift off the surface of the wound, leaving a clean healthy wound bed in which the regeneration of skin tissue can occur.
- Manuka Honey stimulates the growth of tissue involved in the healing process.
- Manuka Honey stimulates the formation of new blood capillaries and the growth of fibroblasts that replace the connective tissue of the deeper layer of the skin and produce the collagen fibers that give strength to the repair.
- Manuka Honey has an anti-inflammatory action that relieves pain.
- Manuka Honey has antifungal properties that can cure ringworm and other fungal conditions such as athlete's foot, jock itch and nail fungus.
- Manuka Honey is all-natural and organic.
- Manuka Honey has no known side effects.
Now, some of these benefits are from actually rubbing the honey into the wounds and not ingesting them...but I wanted to list all them all for your benefit.
Manuka honey also comes in two types:
Benefits of Raw, Organic Honey:1. Regular
2. UMF (Unique Manuka Factor)--The
higher the UMF, the stronger the antibacterial properties.
- Taking organic raw honey is a healthy way to get an energy boost. Its carbohydrates supply us with energy and strength. It can boost your endurance and reduce muscle fatigue.
- Honey is a great aid in relieving morning sickness, reportedly even more effective than traditional soda crackers. It’s also good for sore throats including laryngitis and pharyngitis.
- Honey and cinnamon can help in many areas including relief from bladder infections, arthritis, upset stomach and bad breath. It’s even supposed to be able to slow down hair loss.
- Honey can be used as a medication for men with problems of impotence and women with problems related to infertility. Warm raw goat milk and raw honey is believed to increase sperm count considerably.
- A salve made of honey, for diabetic ulcers, has been proven effective when other topical antibiotics are not well tolerated. It can be applied to eczema, canker sores or bleeding gums.
- Honey and apple cider vinegar can be used for many ailments like stomach aches, constipation and even migraines.
- Honey and lemon goes to work in the body shifting the extra fat stores, thus making it usable energy for regular body functions. And, honey is cholesterol-free. It reportedly can even help to keep cholesterol levels in check.
- Honey has a viscous texture due to its low water content. It also establishes a poor environment for bad bacteria to grow, and is a good natural preservative.
Despite the numerous benefits listed above, both raw and Manuka honey is one and a half times sweeter than sugar and feeds the systemic yeast infection, candida. It also raises blood sugar almost as much as table sugar. So if you have candida gut issues, as many autistic children do, or you're diabetic, you'll want to eat honey very sparingly.
Once you are free of candida symptoms, and your digestive tract is well populated with the friendly microflora essential for good health, you may be able to handle small amounts of honey.
Molasses
Molasses is made by refining sugarcane and sugar beets. During processing, sugar crystals are extracted leaving a dark, syrupy mixture. If the molasses is from sugarcane grown in high quality soil, it can have an abundance of minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium. Blackstrap Molasses is the darkest color molasses you can get, and this indicates the presence of less sugar, and more nutrients. Again, like honey, even the healthiest version of molasses will feed candida.
Avoid Agave Nectar!!
Agave is derived from a plant found mainly in Mexico and contains a sweet, sticky juice that is ninety percent fructose. Growers have unfortunately found a way to process agave, and convert it into something called hydrolyzed high fructose inulin syrup. This chemically processed agave is similar to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sugar with serious health implications. In fact, some agave distributors have been caught re-labeling HFCS as agave syrup!
It is difficult to tell whether the agave syrup sold on the market is from a toxic variety of agave, which might be used due to the shortage of blue agave, or whether it is the highly processed fructose syrup. For these reasons, it is best to avoid agave syrup until further legal mandates are in place to ensure its source, and its safety.
This recently released information has me deeply disturbed. Like many parents of autistic children, we've been sweetening my son's foods with agave for over a year now, as we believed it was a 'low glycemic index' food, which wouldn't feed candida. We were betrayed by manipulative marketing.
Despite what we were led to believe, agave is NOT:
- a natural, organic food
- low calorie
- low on the glycemic index
In conclusion, I recommend avoiding all other types of sugar, including fructose, HFCS, agave, and any type of artificial sweeteners. I hope this information is helpful to you and I hope you'll all consider making the change to natural sweeteners.

Artificial Sweeteners: Too Good To Be True
Even without seeing the results of these polls, I can safely say at one point or another throughout our lives, we've all dieted and happily chugged an artificial sweetener in our coffee, iced tea, diet soda, or lemonade. Unfortunately, while we were imagining the svelte figure we were sure to obtain but cutting all the sugar and calories, our bodies were in chaos. A chaos caused by:
- Nutrasweet/Equal -- aspartame
- Sweet N' Low -- saccharin
- Splenda -- sucralose
Since their introduction to the market after approval by the FDA, these artificial sweeteners have wreaked havoc on bodies world-wide. Side effects as simple as headaches and severe as cancer have been reported.
ASPARTAME
Perhaps the worst of the worst is aspartame. Although I'm not certain when this news clip was made (the computers featured suggests it was probably awhile ago), it's still very much relevant today.
Millions of people consume aspartame everyday...it's hard not to. Aspartame is contained in 6-7,000 items on the market today.
It was approved by the FDA in 1981, despite it causing multiple brain tumors in laboratory rats. While a variety of symptoms have been reported, most fall into the neurological and behavioral category consisting mostly of headaches, mood alterations, and hallucinations. The remaining third is mostly gastrointestinal symptoms.
According to Dr. Mercola, some side effects of aspartame include:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Memory and hearing loss
- Hormonal problems
- Epilepsy
- Brain lesions
- Neuroendocrine disorders
- Vision problems
- Headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness
- Nausea and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Weakness, numbness and shooting pains in your extremities
- Behavioral disturbances
- Memory lapses
And, of course, there's also cancer.
According to Dr. Mercola, "one well-controlled, peer-reviewed, SEVEN-year study even found that as little as 20 mg per day can cause cancer in humans. One 12-ounce diet soda contains about 180 mg of aspartame, so you do the math on that risk!"
Aspartame can be found in the following items, so be sure to read labels to check if it's aspartame-free.
- Diet sodas, juice drinks, and flavored waters
- Chewing gum
- Diet and diabetic foods
- Breakfast cereals, such as Fiber One
- Fiber supplements, such as orange flavored Metamucil
- Jams
- Sweets
- Certain vitamins (including those for childrens) as well as prescription and over the-counter drugs such as Alka Seltzer Plus, and some Tylenol medications
SACCHARIN
Although sometimes considered the best-of-the-worst in terms of safety, saccharin has been linked to bladder cancer in rats.
According to Lisa Shea of bellaonline.com, "The FDA began researching saccharin in the 70s, to ensure it really WAS safe. A series of studies were done and saccharin was found to cause bladder cancers. Some felt it was impurities in the saccharin, and not the saccharin itself, that caused the trouble, so nothing was done. However, in 1977, Canadians proved conclusively that it WAS the saccharin itself causing the cancer.
As a result, the FDA required that any saccharin products carry a warning label about cancer.
The actual warning reads:
"Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin, which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals."
In fact, drinking just two cans of diet soda a day increases a person's risk for bladder cancer (and a myriad of other problems).
Saccharin has also been shown to be very addictive...as addictive as opiates.
Furthermore, Shea says, "Pregnant mothers are especially cautioned to stay away from saccharin, because even small usage of saccharin could overwhelm the developing fetus' defenses and cause damage to the developing bladder area."
SUCRALOSE
Per Dr. Mercola:
"It’s very important to realize that Splenda (sucralose) is actually NOT sugar, despite its marketing slogan “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar”. Rather it’s a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, and with detrimental health effects to match."
That's right, folks. Splenda (i.e. sucralose) is loaded with chlorine.
Various news reports have also centered around artificial sweeteners’ ability to impair your appetite regulation and leading to weight gain.
Other side effects of Splenda include:
- Stimulate your appetite
- Increase carbohydrate cravings
- Stimulate fat storage and weight gain
- Gastrointestinal problems (including decreasing beneficial bacteria in your gut by 50%)
- Migraines
- Seizures
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Allergic reactions
- Blood sugar increases
- Weight gain
As with the other artificial sweeteners, you might be consuming sucralose without realizing you're doing so. This happened to us, in fact. I ordered some liquid zinc from a very reputable company and discovered too late it contained oodles of sucralose. So once again...READ YOUR LABELS! I can't stress how important it is to monitor what you're ingesting.
And remember, Splenda has NEVER been proven safe for human consumption!
Because the length of this entry is out of control, I will do another entry in the next few days about healthier, safe sweetener alternatives.
In the meantime, avoid this artificial junk and you might be surprised how much better you start feeling.
Stay Healthy,

A Few Words On The Swine Flu
Well, don't even get me started on vaccines...and as for medicine, there are plenty of vitamin supplements you can buy to keep you healthy.
I do, however, want to share with you a letter I just received from Dr. Jay Gordon, a pediatrician in California who I met at the Green Our Vaccines rally in Washington D.C. last summer. I think he offers some excellent advice and rationalization.
Without further ado...Dr. Jay Gordon:
Greetings!
Just wash your hands.
Every year, hundreds of viruses pass through the pediatric and adult community. Many of the bugs are disruptive and keep kids out of school and adults away from work. Some of the viruses have unique signs and symptoms, but most just cause amorphous aches, sneezing, coughing or intestinal upset.
Influenza viruses, especially new ones, trigger more news stories and can be made to seem much more frightening and dangerous than they really are. Government agencies and media don't supply statistical context and make it sound like you've got a "fifty-fifty" chance of contracting this new virus. They then make it sound like a lot of people who get this influenza end up in the hospital and may die. Statistically, nothing could be further from the truth: The chance that the new virus is really dangerous is small. The chance that you'll get it is much, much smaller, and the possibility that you or a family member will be harmed by the virus is so slim that the news should be on page twenty, not page one.
Swine Flu is a virus for which there is no vaccine, no threat to your family and there are undoubtedly tens of thousands of harmless undiagnosed cases throughout the world. The news stories are probably taking a hundred questionable respiratory deaths in Mexico and guessing.
There actually is a very, very small chance that this virus could cause severe illness and whenever this occurs hospitalization and even fatalities are reported. The likelihood of a pandemic is minuscule, but newspapers, governments agencies and the manufacturers of pharmaceuticals do their best work and make their biggest sales when people are scared.
Tamiflu is recommended for treatment and prevention of this influenza virus. The company which gets the drug's royalties (Gilead) has as a major stockholder--previously Chairman--one Donald Rumsfeld.
Local pharmacies are already running low on Tamiflu.
Connect these dots.

The usual boring admonitions apply: wash your hands, stay well-rested and well-hydrated. You do not need to buy Tamiflu. It is an effective antiviral drug but has possible side effects.

As far as our office prescribing Tamiflu, we would rather not, but we will if you insist. I promise you that I personally am purchasing none for my family and would recommend the same to you.

So there you have it...the most valuable information you'll receive during this trying time of doubt--get plenty of rest; eat nutritious meals; practice excellent hand washing techniques; keep hydrated, especially on these hot, muggy days; and lastly, find a great multi-vitamin to help give your body the vitamins and minerals it's lacking.
**UPDATE**
The CDC just announced on live TV they're considering a vaccine. Give me a break! Do they not understand viruses mutate and a vaccine developed today will be completely useless tomorrow? Looks like pharmaceutical companies are in it to make money, once again.
In other news, I was recently asked to do an entry regarding artificial sweeteners and their dangers, as well as healthy alternatives. I'm going to try to further research and write that information later this week.
In the meantime, stay healthy!

No 'Sweet Dreams' For You? Read On...
The night is dark and silent...well, except for your slightly snoring husband lying next to you, a big undefined lump curled under the covers. Although the pillow-top mattress is brand new, you're finding it hard to get comfortable. The illuminated green numbers on your alarm clock tick continuously forward, mocking you with their rapid march toward dawn.
"If only I could sleep!" you think to yourself. "I might as well be downstairs watching TV and getting the kid's school lunches packed. Speaking of the kids...Sara has a doctor's appointment tomorrow at noon. I hope the school doesn't give me trouble for taking her out for another appointment. Sam has his big social studies test tomorrow. I hope he's prepared. We certainly went over the material enough. I also need to do some grocery shopping...need to balance the checkbook before I can do that though. Oh shoot! Did I subtract my last purchase at Target? I don't think I did. GREAT! I think I might be overdrawn. Maybe I should go check right now. I also need to pee and get a drink of water so I'll just get up and do a few things...maybe that will wear me out and I can get a couple hours of sleep before the alarm goes off."
Sound familiar? As parents, working or stay-at-home, I suspect we've all suffered insomnia at some point during our lives. I know I have. And truly, is there anything worse than having a mind which just won't shut down or a body causing physical discomfort while trying to get some much needed rest? It's not really surprising sleep issues are such a common complaint among adults...and yes, among autistic children as well. These days, parents are juggling fifty (or more) balls...and they're all up in the air just waiting to cascade down on us at any moment. It's a true cause for stress and anxiety. With autistic children, insomnia seems more a result of severe digestive issues.
Insomnia is simply lack of sleep on a regular basis.
Chronic insomnia can also be the result of an underlying health condition such as depression, menopause, lung disease, certain heart conditions, digestive issues/food allergies, sleep apnea, or even diabetes. So please check with your naturopath, homeopath, or medical doctor before simply assuming the lack of appropriate sleep is caused by stress or anxiety.
As always, do your research before putting anything in your body. This includes both pharmaceutical and herbal, holistic type remedies.
Natural Sleep Aids
1. Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by our bodies in the pineal gland
which is located at the center of our brains. Darkness causes our
brains to produce this hormone which usually causes a sleepy, lethargic feeling
to occur. Any light at all can cause a disruption of melanin...so always
keep your bedroom as dark as possible. Melatonin regulates our bodies
circadian rhythms, also known as our wake/sleep cycles over each 24 hour
period. There are two types of melatonin...natural and synthetic. From my
research, it appears most choose the synthetic time release capsules as they
more closely resemble the molecular make-up of melanin, without the risk of
animal parts which could possible carry disease or viruses.**Sidenote**
Funny how pharmaceutical manufacturers are worried about animal parts and the
potential for disease transmission in melatonin...yet they put chicken embryos
and monkey blood & tissue in vaccinations.Anyway....
Melatonin should be taken 20 to 30 minutes prior to bedtime. Dosage
recommendations suggest starting at 1 mg and increasing 0.5 mg every night until
sustainable, restful sleep is obtained. However, if you feel hungover in
the morning...you've taken too much and should decrease your dosage by 0.5 mg
until that groggy morning feeling subsides. The average dose for adults (and some
kids too), is 3 to 5 mg, although I've heard of people taking as much as
20 mg with no residual effects. No real side effects have been reported other than slow reaction time and
lethargy. This is my top choice for a natural sleep aid, as our bodies
already naturally produce this hormone. Not only does it aid with sleep,
it's also an antioxidant, an anti-depressant, an immune booster, and a
dietary supplement. If you find it's not working for you, I suggest
increasing your dosage. Like with any sleep aid, DO NOT take if you plan
on driving or operating heavy machinery. You can find melatonin at any local health food store. It can also be found at Kirkman Labs. Or http://www.iherb.com/ has many options available as well.
2. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)
Valerian root is a plant indigenous to Europe and Asia. It's been used
since the time of the ancient Greek and Roman empires for maladies such
as sleeping problems, digestive complaints, nervousness, trembling, tension
headaches and heart palpitations.I know of several people who use this in combination with melatonin.
Valerian works by increasing the body's supply of gamma aminobutyric acid
(GABA), a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. One huge benefit
of Valerian is the lack of 'hangovers' or feelings of grogginess the following
morning. Some side effects include headache, vivid dreams, dizziness, itchiness, and
upset stomach. Also, if you have a known history of liver issues, this
supplement is not for you, as it's metabolized in the liver.Adults may use the following amounts of valerian to relieve insomnia by
taking it 30 to 45 minutes prior to bedtime:
- 2–3 g dried root in tea, up to several times daily
- 1/4–1/2 tsp (1–3 mL) valerian tincture, up to several times daily
- 1/4 tsp (1–2 mL) fluid extract
- 150–300 mg valerian extract, standardized to contain0.8% valerenic acid
It may take one to two weeks of regular use before the herbal preparation
takes effect. When giving valerian to children, recommended adult dosages should be
adjusted in proportion to the child's weight. Most dosages of herbal products
are calculated for an adult weighing 150 lb (70 kg). A child weighing 75 lb (35
kg) should therefore receive 1/2 the adult dose.Again, this can be found at your local health food store or at iherb.
3. Tryptophan
4. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)Think back to Thanksgiving day. Remember eating that huge turkey-filled
meal and then feeling a desire to do nothing but curl up on the couch and
sleep?Thank you...tryptophan.
Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin in the brain. Serotonin plays a
role in sleep induction and it relies on tryptophan to aid in its
formation. While you can get tryptophan in supplement form at iherb, you can also
find this amino acid in various foods, as well. Foods like turkey, milk,
beans, nuts, cheese and eggs are full of tryptophan. You can also boost
serotonin levels in the brain by eating foods high in carbohydrates.Dosage recommendations for insomnia are 1000 to 2500 mg daily.
5-HTP is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan, which is used to
boost serotonin levels in the body. 5-HTP is also the precursor of melatonin,
which regulates sleep cycles.
5-HTP has been shown to aid with insomnia, depression, anxiety, appetite
control, and pain issues and is about five times more potent than regular
tryptophan.
Dosage is up to 100 mg daily.5. Diet
Foods To Avoid, according to Holistic
Online:
- Coffee
- Tea
- Spicy foods
- Cola
- Chocolate
- Stimulant drugs
- Alcohol
- Refined carbohydrates
- Additives
- Preservatives
- Non-organic foods containing pesticides.
- Canned foods or any source of toxicity or heavy metals.
- Sugar and foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. These raise
blood-sugar levels and can cause a burst of energy that disturbs sleep.- Foods that are likely to cause gas, heartburn, or indigestion, such as fatty
or spicy foods, garlic-flavored foods, beans, cucumbers, and peanuts.- Foods such as meat that are high in protein can inhibit sleep by blocking
the synthesis of serotonin, making us feel more alert.- Monosodium glutamate (MSG), often found in Chinese food. This causes a
stimulant reaction in some people.- Avoid cigarettes and tobacco. While smoking may seem to have a calming
effect, nicotine is actually a neurostimulant and can cause sleep
problems.Foods to eat, according to Holistic
Online:
- Chlorophyll-rich foods, such as leafy, green. vegetables, steamed or
boiled.- Microalgae, such as chlorella and spirulina.
- Oyster shell can be purchased in health food stores and taken as a
nutritional supplement.- Whole grains: Whole wheat, brown rice, and oats have a calming and soothing
effect on the nervous system and the mind (unless, of course, you're on the
gluten free diet...then this is a huge no-no).- Carbohydrates also boost serotonin, which promotes better sleep.
- Mushrooms (all types)
- Fruit, especially mulberries and lemons, which calm the mind.
- Seeds--jujube seeds are used to calm the spirit and support the heart. Chia
seeds also have a sedative effect.- Dill
- Basil
- Magnesium rich foods
Diet plays a very important role in the quality and quantity of sleep,
as you can tell, as well as our overall health.
6. Some other suggestions
- Relaxation techniques such as yoga, visualization, and progressive muscle relaxation.
- Aromatherapy--lavender, in particular, has sedative qualities.
- Light--make sure you get adequate amounts of light in the morning and afternoon to help set your circadian rhythm.
- Music--gentle, slow music is another remedy that can help to improve sleep without medication. Music has been found to improve sleep quality, decrease nightly wakenings, lengthen sleep time, and increase satisfaction with sleep.
- Acupuncture
- Exercise
- Chamomile, hops, passionflower, lemon balm, and ashwagandha are other herbs that are often used for insomnia. Some people may find benefit from simply having a cup of chamomile tea one to two hours before going to bed. Chamomile can reduce anxiety, calm the digestive system, and relieve muscle tension.
My recommendation is to use a few of these suggestions in combination for a healthy, restful night's sleep.
Sweet dreams!

Fluoride: The Myth
I unknowingly gave my son ANOTHER toxic substance for nearly two years. Fluoride.
At this point, I know you're probably thinking, "Oh come on, Bridgett. It's fluoride....the stuff keeping our teeth healthy. It's in our toothpaste, our drinking water...it can't be dangerous."
Unfortunately, it is...dangerous, that is.
Let me start by saying, fluoride is a by-product of copper, aluminum, and iron manufacturing. Yes, that's right. A by-product. A pollutant. In other words, it's disposable waste. Historically, the industries spent huge amounts of money on its disposal...that is until the 1950's when the aluminum companies somehow managed to convince our government this toxic by-product prevented tooth decay. Lo and behold, this resulted in our water supply being infiltrated with fluoride and pediatrician's prescribing fluoride drops to all their patients...even newborns.
But does fluoride actually prevent tooth decay?
The answer is a resounding, "No!"
In the mid-80's, 39,000 school children in 84 areas around the U.S. were studied and the results showed no statistical difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated cities. Indeed, 97% of European countries do not have fluoridated water. These countries refuse to fill the water supplies of their citizens with fluoride because they feel health decisions should be personal and not mandated by the government. What a concept! And yet the people living in Europe have teeth just as healthy, if not healthier, than ours. In fact, there is no increase in cavity production once fluoridation has stopped.
As recently as November 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised parents not to give their babies fluoridated water. Babies exposed to fluoride are at high risk of developing dental fluorosis - a permanent tooth defect caused by fluoride damaging the cells which form the teeth. There is also evidence fluoride may damage the developing brain, causing learning deficits and other problems.
Just a few points to consider according to Selwyn Johnston, an Australian advocate for fluoride free water:
- Fluoride is a known toxin.
- Fluoride is described by its manufacturers' safety data as a 'hazardous waste'. It is illegal to dump at sea.
- Fluoride consumption by human beings increases the general cancer death rate.
- Fluoride exposure disrupts the synthesis of collagen and leads to the breakdown of collagen in bone, tendon, muscle, skin, cartilage, lungs, kidney and trachea.
- Fluoride inhibits antibody formation in the blood.
- Fluorides have a disruptive effect on various tissues in the body.
- Fluoride confuses the immune system and causes it to attack the body's own tissues, and increases the tumor growth rate in cancer prone individuals.
- Fluoride kills red blood cells and damages gastric mucosa, resulting in the symptoms of 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome'.
- Fluorides are medically categorized as protoplasmic poisons, which is why they are used to kill rodents.
- Fluoride is a cumulative poison… we excrete about half what we ingest. The rest is stored, mainly in the bones, where it increases the density but changes the internal architecture of the bone. This makes bones more brittle and prone to fracture.
Did you catch that little tidbit about it being used in rodent poison? Specifically, rats and cockroaches. Lovely.
It's also one of the ingredients in Prozac and nerve gas. Yes, nerve gas. Even lovlier.
In review, let us look what exactly I did to my beautiful son, Parker.
I injected him with multiple vaccinations over a 24 month period. Vaccinations which contained thimerosal, aluminum, components of antifreeze, MSG, formaldehyde, and various other highly toxic substances. I then gave him fluoride tablets for another two years. Fluoride has been shown to increase absorption of aluminum in the brain. It's also stored in the body, as we only excrete about half of what we ingest. My son has a detoxification malfunction, as do many other children. And we wonder why our children are so sick? Environmentally, the United States is in very poor shape.
So what can you do?
- Buy fluoride free toothpastes. We use Epic Dental, a fluoride-free, xylitol based toothpaste. I also use their mouthwash, mints, and gum. Another fluoride-free toothpaste is Tom's of Maine. My kids hated the Tom's toothpaste and refused to use it...the Epic toothpaste has a nice minty flavor.
- Avoid the bottled water which includes a fluoride additive.
- If you live in a city with a fluoridated water supply, do not drink from the tap unless you've added a fluoride filter. Or, at the very least, limit your tap water intake.
- Write to your city government and voice your concerns about the safety of your fluoridated water supply.
- Refuse all fluoride treatments at your dentist's office. This may not be as difficult as you predict. More and more dentists are recognizing the validity of recent studies confirming the dangers of fluoride and its very limited benefits.
One final thought. My daughter has had no fluoride at all...her teeth are sparkling white and look beautiful. My son, who's been overdosed on fluoride, has stains on his teeth and they look pretty bad. Just a personal comparison...
In conclusion, fluoride is not something your body needs. Fluoride deficiency doesn't exist. Indeed, the stuff is just plain bad.

A Brief Update
I haven't forgotten this blog. I've simply been debating my next topic of discussion. Not to mention these entries take quite a few hours to write, not including research time...and I've just been so busy of late.
I'm going to try and write and entry tomorrow (unless my parents visit), in which case I'll write on Monday instead.
Thank you for your patience.
I do hope you've received some valuable information from this blog so far.
If you have any recommendations or topic requests, please don't hesitate to throw them my way.
Many thanks.

Yeast: The 'Gift' That Keeps Giving
I still remember waking up that first night, our house bathed in darkness, and hearing my son giggling hysterically from his bedroom across the hall.
"What could he be laughing about when there's nothing to see?"
The first few times it happened, I was amused. The giggling would usually wake both Doug and me. We'd look at each other and grin in appreciation that our son was so happy he could find amusement in utter darkness.
"Maybe he had a funny dream," I'd say to Doug.
"Maybe he's just thinking about something funny that happened today," Doug replied.
It seemed the laughing would come in cycles. He'd laugh for several nights in a row, big guttural laughs--not his usual baby giggles, and then it would stop. As the months passed, I eventually noticed a connection between the giggling and Parker's stomach being severely distended. This quirky night time laughter went on for several years.
Despite noticing the relevant symptoms, nothing clicked for me until I joined the TACA Yahoo forum last summer. One of the first posts I read referred to the 'yeast giggle' and how it often came at inappropriate times. I immediately responded to the post, asking for clarification and describing Parker's midnight escapades.
"He has yeast."
"You're dealing with yeast."
"Start him on the yeast protocol."
Every response I received was a variation of those statements.
From a previous post, you're probably aware I first started Parker on gut healing supplements. Once I was convinced his gut had improved I started the yeast protocol.
Before I get into the meat of this entry, let me clarify a common misconception...our guts are supposed to be inhabited by beneficial bacteria and yeast, NOT pathogenic strains. The problem is, according to the Yeast Infection Advisor:
Yeast infection and fungi in Americans has been estimated by the experts to
be present in 85% of the population and goes largely undiagnosed, especially in
men and children. This all too common infection is American women caused them to spend over a
half a billion dollars for treatment of this fungus in 2002 alone. Most of
this was spent on over the counter medications which generally are effective as
a temporary solution.
Now I know most of you are probably thinking, "It's a yeast infection. Buy some Monistat and get over it." Indeed, I'm not referring to vaginal yeast infections...they're just a minor symptom of a bigger issue--systemic yeast (candida). As usual, if a woman has a vaginal yeast infection she'll go to a gynecologist, get a prescription for for an anti-fungal cream, and treat the problem superficially. Just another example of medicine today...treating the symptoms instead of the causes.
Most people are completely unaware a fungal infection exists in their bodies. The fungus typically starts growing in the intestinal tract and if left untreated, spreads to other organs in the body. This primes the body for various diseases, including cancer.
What Causes Pathogenic Yeast Overgrowth?
- Antibiotic overuse
- Anti-inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil)
- Birth control pills (hormones)
- Foods (beef and dairy due to the antibiotics injected into cows prior to slaughter & grains which are stored in silos growing mold for months prior to use)
- A compromised immune system
- Environmental toxins (mercury, aluminum, lead, vaccinations, etc.)
- Predisposition issues such as: trauma, endocrine problems, indwelling catheters, steroid therapy, drug dependency, diabetes, etc.
Symptoms of Pathogenic Yeast Overgrowth:
- Chapped and dry flaky skin
- Poor appetite
- Chronic fatigue
- Stiff shoulders
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Bad breath
- Bloating
- Indigestion
- Frequent intestinal gas
- Frequent diarrhea
- Sexual dysfunction
- Arthritis
- Chronic hives
- Suicidal depression
- Autism
- Worsening premenstrual syndrome
- Irritability and mood swings
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Muscle fatigue and pain
- Hyperactivity
- Bladder infections
- Recurring vaginitis
- Menstrual irregularities
- Short attention span
- Memory loss
- Hypoglycemia
- Respiratory problems
- Learning difficulties
- Chronic allergies
- Gluten intolerance
- Blurred vision
- Sinus and ear problems
- Symptoms of multiple sclerosis
- Acne and hormonal imbalances
- An excessive craving for sugars and carbohydrates (These foods feed the yeast and aid in their growth and reproduction.)
Symptoms of Pathogenic Yeast Overgrowth in Autistic Children:
- Spinning obsessively
- Hand flapping
- Red ring around the anus or a bad diaper rash
- Jumping/bouncing on the furniture
- Headstands
- Inappropriate laughter
- Hyperactivity
- Playing with genitals obsessively
- Drooling/spit bubbles
- Sound sensitivity
- Sleep disturbance
- Bloated, gassy bellies
- Bed wetting
A pretty impressive group of symptoms, yes? Yet somehow conventional medicine overlooks yeast every time. You'll rarely find a doctor who says, "Oh, let's treat you for yeast. I bet that's the problem." Just remember...it's been estimated that 85% of Americans have yeast issues. Do the math--the bulk of Americans are being medically misdiagnosed, much to their detriment. Pathogenic yeast strains can be deadly.
Pathogenesis = Disease Producing
If you suspect you have a yeast issue and would like to know definitively, take this: Yeast Infection Questionnaire
Upon researching candida, I grew to suspect many of my family members had yeast issues...not just Parker. I decided to try the treatment on myself first as I'd heard it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. As yeast dies, it emits a toxin which can cause 'flu-like symptoms.'
Yup. I can vouch for that statement.
I had already begun adding aloe juice to my drinks. It's a natural yeast fighter and very soothing to the gut. I recommend Lily of the Desert (whole leaf or fillet) OR George's. The aloe 'bitters' have been removed from the two of these and both are virtually tasteless. I personally prefer the George's as it's completely unidentifiable in drinks, even water. It's clear and completely tasteless. The Lily brand has a brownish tint and although the taste is subtle, it's definitely noticeable. Both brands can be found at your local health food stores. Step 1, complete.
Next, I started a three-day regimen of Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii) capsules to 'jump start' yeast control. S. boulardii is a non-colonizing, non-pathogenic 'friendly' yeast. I took one capsule per day for three days. On days 4 and 5, I had die off of the 'bad' yeasts and bacteria which the S. boulardii had displaced. I felt as if I had a stomach virus. My symptoms included joint aches, diarrhea, gassiness and bloating. There were white specks in my stool and urine, a.k.a. the dead yeast. I know this is probably more information than many of you want to know, but if you decide to treat for yeast you need to know what to expect. Many people, including both my children, have big, fluffy, light colored stools. That's also a sign of yeast die-off.
To minimize the symptoms of the die-off, I took activated charcoal capsules. This is the same thing given in hospitals to treat a drug overdose. It essentially absorbs everything in it's path and pulls it from your system. Remember how I said the dying yeast emits toxins? Well, the charcoal soaks it right up and rids it from your body. It works amazingly well. Step 2, complete.
Immediately following my 3-day S. boulardii regimen, I started probiotic therapy twice daily. Probiotics are simply the beneficial bacteria and yeasts. Since I had just cleared out much of the bad goop from my system, I had to replace it with the good. Probiotics are incredibly important, especially if you've been on antibiotic therapy. Although there are many probiotic options, my family rotates between these three choices from Kirkman Labs.
With probiotics, it's important to remember we MUST keep replenishing those good gut strains daily until our guts are healed/stabilized enough to maintain the good populations on their own. The keys to controlling pathogenic gut strains are restoration of gut pH, repair and re-establishment of gut wall integrity, re-establishment of mucosal protection and normal antibody response. Step 3, complete.
Digestive enzymes are also incredibly effective in helping destroy yeast. Candida has a cell wall composed of cellulose and hemicellulose. The very same materials that make up the outside of plants and allow them to stand upright. The enzymes are able to effectively dissolve this wall, killing the yeast.
To read my entry on digestive enzymes, click here.
There are a couple enzymes designed specifically to kill yeast.
Step 4, complete.
Biotin has been found to effectively suppress the growth of yeast. Biotin is a member of the B-complex family and is needed in amino and essential fatty acid formation. We all take a high-potency dose of 5,000 mg daily for anti-yeast maintenance. As an added bonus, biotin has been found to cause hair and nail growth. We get our biotin from http://www.vitacost.com/. Step 5, complete.
Next up (and yes, we take all the things I've listed thus far), is grapefruit seed extract. Although this stuff tastes absolutely horrendous, it's an excellent anti-yeast agent. In fact, grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is known as Liquid Gold for it's many therapeutic uses. This stuff is so potent, you can only add 1 drop per ounce of fluid. I even use a GSE/water combo in a spray bottle to clean my counters and stove.
This is the brand you want: Nutribiotic
It's the best I've found. One bottle of this will last you for months and months. I usually take one drop each morning and one drop each evening, added in juice. Step 6, complete.
I also use Yeast-Aid from Kirkman Labs which was formulated to support the immune system and control yeast levels in the body. Step 7, complete.
A few other supplemental options are garlic, oil of oregano, and coconut oil. All are natural yeast fighters.
The thing about yeast...there can be several pathogenic strains in one individual. While S. boulardii might kill one strain, it may not kill the other three. This is why it's so important to use a multi-supplement approach when killing yeast. Yeast propagate in a cycle and are actually clones--even one cell remaining can become a population within days given the right conditions.
As for diet, you'll want to limit sugars and carbohydrates (breads, pastas, donuts, etc.), as these are foods which feed yeast and aid in their growth and reproduction. Step 8, complete.
Every member of my immediate family has now been treated for yeast. Autumn very recently had a re-growth as evidenced by her 'Buddha' belly and her increased need for sweets. We're currently re-treating her. As for the rest of us, life is good. We all feel so much healthier having our systems cleared of candida. Oh, by the way, did I mention I lost 7 pounds during my yeast die-off phase?
Yet another reason to delete the yeast...getting rid of some extra poundage. :o)

Vitamin D: Avoiding the 'Toxic Soup' Flu Vaccine
Unfortunately, she now has to have her entire body scanned every six months for malignant growths and as her daughter, so do I. Because I have a parent diagnosed with melanoma, my chances of having a malignant growth increase 75%. Not good odds, eh? I simply can't explain how embarrassing it is bending over and spreading my butt cheeks so my dermatologist can evaluate my skin for lesions. Even worse is knowing one of these days, odds are, she'll find something cancerous.
Obviously, when mom was diagnosed, I jumped on-line and started researching everything I could find about melanoma (you've probably noticed...I'm a big researcher). It's a scary cancer. If it's not found in time, the mortality rate is nearly 100%. This, in particular, makes our bi-yearly checks especially important.
However, on every single site I visited, it was recommended that people with melanoma or a risk for melanoma avoid sunlight at all costs. Many of the sites stated, "If you have to be in the sunlight, use copious amounts of sunscreen, wear big hats and long sleeve shirts." Essentially, if you're going to be outside, cover every inch of skin so it won't be exposed to sunlight. And yes, our dermatologist made the same suggestions.
Avoiding sunlight isn't wise and I believe it's a travesty people are being made to believe the sun is the enemy.
As long as you're getting sun exposure daily...in moderation...your body is able to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D has been proven to not only prevent the flu, but cancer as well. There's also evidence it can help osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, seasonal affective disorder, and psoriasis.
In this entry, because we're in the midst of the dreaded flu season, I'm focusing only on Vitamin D and it's effects on cold & flu. Indeed, the flu vaccine is completely unnecessary and should be avoided at all costs.
Here's why according to Dr. Joseph Mercola:
1. The majority of of flu shots contain 25 micrograms of
mercury; an amount considered unsafe for anyone weighing less than 550
pounds! And which groups are most sensitive to the neurological damage that
has been associated with mercury? Infants, children, and the elderly...the same
groups the CDC pushes hard each year to get vaccinated.
2. No studies have conclusively proven that flu shots prevent flu-related
death among the elderly, yet this is one of the key groups to which they’re
pushed.
3. If you get a flu shot, you can still get the flu (or flu-like symptoms).
This is because it only protects against certain strains, and it’s anyone’s
guess which flu viruses will be in your area.
So why would you take a flu shot – EVERY YEAR -- that has NEVER been proven to be effective, that can give you the very illness you’re trying to prevent, and has potential long-term side effects that are far worse than the flu itself?
The powers that be have done an excellent job of instilling fear into the population so they believe that they must get a shot to stay healthy, but the simple reality is it’s doing you more harm than good.
Each dose of the flu vaccine contains more than 250 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s safety limit for mercury. If that isn't enough to scare you, here's the other ingredients listed in the flu vaccinations we're all so willing to stand in line for:
- Formaldehyde -- a known cancer-causing agent
- Aluminum -- a neurotoxin that has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease
- Triton X-100 -- a detergent
- Phenol (carbolic acid)
- Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)
- Various antibiotics: neomycin, streptomycin, gentamicin – which can cause allergic reactions in some people
Now, I don't know about all you, but I'd much rather prevent the flu naturally than inject that big bunch of crap into my body.
If all this isn't enough to make you re-think the flu vaccine, here's some more information. There is emerging evidence that flu shots cause Alzheimer’s disease, most likely as a result of combining mercury with aluminum and formaldehyde. Mercury in vaccines has also been shown to be a contributing factor in autism.
Other serious, and potentially deadly, adverse reactions to the flu vaccine include joint inflammation and arthritis, anaphylactic shock, and Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralytic autoimmune disease.
For most people, the flu shot does not prevent illness, but actually does the polar opposite--it weakens your immune system and makes you more predisposed to the illness.
I'm sure you've all seen the commercials informing the public how the 'almighty' flu vaccine saves 30,000+ lives each year. Right?
Wrong!
The 30,000 deaths the CDC is referring to is deaths caused by pneumonia...not influenza. In fact, for all the years I could find information, legitimate flu deaths effected less than 500 people and that was mostly elderly folks with compromised immune systems.
The CDC and pharmaceutical companies are fear-mongering to the masses, plain and simple. They have a product they must sell...so they make folks believe they'll get sick and die if they don't use said product.
But do these vaccine manufacturers use their own product? Listen and find out:
So what can you do to protect yourself from the flu? Many things....
1. It's no surprise influenze season happens in the heart of winter...when the sun is but a weak blip in the sky and everybody is Vitamin D deficient. If you live in an area where you actually see the sun during the winter months, get outside! Absorb those rays and let your body do the work of making Vitamin D. If you're like me and live in an area where the winter months are perpetually gray, a tanning bed used in moderation is an option. This doesn't mean we're using the tanning bed for a 'dreamy' tan or allowing ourselves to burn to a crisp...it's all about moderation. If a tanning bed isn't an option, oral Vitamin D is your next best choice. My entire family takes oral Vitamin D.
At this moment, my children take 400 IU's (international units) daily and Doug and I take 1,000 IU's daily.
However, there is developing evidence which shows those dosages are too low to be therapeutic. Instead, they're now recommending 2,000 IU's for children and 5,000 to 10,000 IU's for adults. I'll keep you updated on these developments.
Here's a short video from Dr. Mercola which will give you all the relevant information regarding Vitamin D and the flu.
2. Olive Leaf Extract has been found to be a powerful broad spectrum anti-viral agent, active against all viruses tested, including numerous strains of influenza and para-influenza viruses, according to Dr. Mercola.
My entire family takes Olive Leaf Extract, as well.
For more information about OLE (Olive Leaf Extract), please click here.
3. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet free of sugar.
4. Eat garlic regularly. For more information about why garlic is beneficial, click here.
5. Excercise daily.
6. Get adequate sleep.
7. Make sure you have adequate amounts of essential fatty acids in your diet.
8. Avoid stress.
9. Boost your immune system with a good multi-vitamin, vitamin C, and zinc.
10. Good handwashing is always key in preventing any illness.
I do hope this information is enough to at least give you pause the next time you're debating whether or not to get the flu vaccine. There are other, healthier, safer ways to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu. Vaccinations are not the answer.
My hope is we all stay healthy this flu season. Here's to continued health...the natural way!
